If marketing brings up big feels for you, you’re definitely not alone. It’s not uncommon for new clients, colleagues, and friends to tell me that marketing sends them into a literal trauma response.
This can look like:
Fight: finding all the best practices and checking those boxes. You find prescriptions and follow them aggressively. And when it (inevitably) doesn’t get you the results you wanted, you decide the world is against you and everyone and everything sucks and your business is doomed and you’re about to brawl anyone who challenges you.
Flight: using busy work to distract yourself from your marketing apprehension that maybe it won’t work and maybe people won’t like you and maybe customers won’t buy. Post a whole lot of trendy nothing. You’re marketing, but you’re not in the marketing. And customers aren’t connecting.
Freeze: just straight up ghosting your marketing for weeks or months on end. You can’t begin to think of what you’d say in your marketing or what the point of saying it is.
#Triggered. What now?
The thing is, marketing your business is triggering AF. No wonder you have a hard time staying present and giving the people the content they want when your nervous system keeps going haywire! It’s hard to make magnetic, confident, irresistible marketing when you’re terrified.
But, don’t fret. You just need some tools to healthily cope with your marketing anxiety when it comes around and adorably but unhelpfully tries to “protect” you from being visible enough for people to give you the money, accolades, success, and reciprocity you crave. You don’t need protecting, but your anxiety thinks you do… because getting what you want is unfamiliar. (Scary!)
