Marketing While Hangry? Don’t.

An angry brunette in a cute rainbow sweater holds a cartoon quote bubble reading "Hanger Is Not the Vibe"

Hanger= “A lethal combination of hunger and anger, the result of waiting so long to eat that your blood sugar drops to dangerously low levels, impairing both your mood and your judgment.” - Urban Dictionary user

Wanna know the #1 most overlooked marketing asset you have? Your body.

I don’t necessarily mean that in a sexy way. Though, Lord, I’m not against being sexy in your marketing- it can be so fun and effective! But, even if you wear your collar buttoned all the way up to your nose- you just can’t afford to not factor your body in when it comes to your marketing strategy.

Here’s why you have to pay attention to what your body needs when marketing your business.

Wait, What?

Ok, I know most of the business and marketing gurus you follow are much more likely to talk about trending sounds on Instagram and how often you’re supposed to post than they are to talk about why you need to stop dissociating for your body in order to have authentic, effective marketing.

But, like, if you’re just doing what you’re told- how is that authentic? How will you even know what’s authentic to you if you’re disconnected from your body and feelings?

What Can You “Offer” When Drawing From an Empty Well?

Marketing needs to convince your aligned customers that when they buy from you, they will be welcomed, taken care of, & supported. If you’re not even doing that for your own body, you’re not going to be very convincing!

Think about when you feel most charismatic, attractive, and magnetic. Think about when conversations move smoothly.

Is it when you’re starving? Sleep deprived? Burnt out and miserable? Have been working for 12 hours straight and haven’t let the sun kiss your skin in days? Is it when you’re mid anxiety attack? When you’re bitter and hate everyone? Is it when you’re catastrophizing about finances and your future?

No, it is not.

When your body is in a state of lack, deprivation, or a fight/flight/freeze/fawn trauma response, your energy is not inviting and supportive, it is fearful and defensive.

Your body is probably sending subtle signals to folks to stay away rather than come closer.

How, in such a state, will your marketing provide comfort and relief to someone you are perceiving as a threat?

How To Be More Magnetic In Your Marketing

You wanna know when people want to be around you? Wanna know when they want some of what you’re having? When they want to buy from you so they can feel how you feel?

When you feel good

When you’re resourced. When you’ve slept enough and had enough to eat and stretched and did something fun that day. When you’re not in pain or deep discomfort or caught in a trauma response. When you’re not trying to escape your feelings or your body. When you are present rather than numb. When you’re genuinely happy to engage with your clients and you are lit up to serve them and the interaction won’t leave you feeling depleted afterward.

But like, how?

If while reading that, you’re thinking “MUST BE NICE”- I get it. So many of us are so caught up in hustle culture, professionalism, and perfectionism that we don’t even remember what it feels like to be fully, pleasantly physically present.

Luckily, we can heal that shit.

We can prioritize meeting our needs and showing up for our health before we show up for our marketing… And watch everything we do in our marketing become a lot more effective with a lot less work.

It starts with learning tools for staying connected to our bodies. It starts with learning how to translate discomfort and challenging emotions into the messages our bodies are trying to send our brains about what we need to feel safe and happy.

And when we are able to stop numbing out, stop disconnecting, stop dissociating from our bodies in order to get through the day, you know what gets easier?

Being authentic. Being vulnerable. Being welcoming.

All key ingredients to the kind of marketing that makes people fall in love with your brand.

How Do I Stop Ignoring My Body?

For me, I need to make time every day to check in with how I’m feeling. Have I had enough to eat? Enough sleep? Can I work or is rest what is needed? Physically, what’s going on with my body? Can I identify a tightness in my throat as a certain emotion? What is that emotion trying to let me know about my wants, needs, and boundaries?

If my nervous system is flooded with fear and I’m going into a trauma response, I use movement and/or body-based meditative techniques to come back into my body, identify what is causing my fear, and make an intentional decision about how I want to respond.

Above all, healing my ability to stay connected to my body required KINDNESS. If I’m hungry, I make time to eat. If I’m exhausted, I make time to sleep or take time off from work. If I’m filled with nervous energy, I dance, rollerskate, hop up and down, or shake it right out of my system. If I’m afraid, I let my body have my attention and give myself what I need to feel soothed- rather than my past less-than-helpful coping mechanisms of social media doom scrolling, alcohol, or the world’s worst dating decisions.

But remember, you can’t berate yourself into healing. Or pressure yourself into it. Or have perfectionistic expectations about your healing process.

Be nice to you, and stop ignoring you, so you can be nice to your customers and put your focus on helping them through your marketing rather than getting them to help you.
